Remploy ULR joins Communitas ULF team as Project
Officer
Colin Daws, a ULR for 4
years at Remploy Pinxton, has recently joined the Communitas Union Learning
Fund team as a full-time Project Officer. Colin will be based in Communitas’ office
in Rotherham, and will cover union learning
activity in Regions 3 and 7.
Colin has been one of the
unions most committed and most successful ULRs over the last few years. In 2005
he was awarded the Remploy ULR of the Year award, which was presented to him by
Michael J Leahy (see picture below left).
As ULR for Remploy Pinxton,
Colin took on the responsibility of managing the on-site learning centre. Colin
helped workers to access IT courses, sign language courses, NVQs and other opportunities,
and supported them throughout their learning. Colin also worked hard to ensure
none of his colleagues would be excluded from taking part in learning by
tailoring provision to suit people with disabilities. It seems that Colin’s
passion for learning is contagious as most workers at Pinxton have now attended
some form of learning
Commenting on his new role
Colin said: “Looking back over the 4 years of being a ULR, I would have never
thought I would progress to become a Project Officer. With the help and support
of the Union and Communitas, I developed
skills and gained confidence promoting and establishing learning at work, which
I am very keen to share with my fellow members and branches. This new position
has given me an exciting opportunity to take up the challenges as a Project
Officer with Communitas and support other ULRs to develop skills and learning”
Colin can be contacted on colindaws@communitas.org.uk
We wish him all the best in
his new role.
